The city is home to the headquarters of the American Society of Agricultural and Biological Engineers (ASABE), an international professional association that was founded in 1907. Nicknamed St. Joe, the city is situated at the mouth of the St. Joseph River, and historically served as an important travel point for Native Americans because its location between the Mississippi River and the Great Lakes of North America. It was incorporated as a city in 1891.
