Serving as the seat of Mackinac County, St Ignace is a coastal city in Michigan, situated on Lake Huron. It was settled in the 17th century and incorporated as a city in 1883. It is one of the oldest cities in the state. The area was originally inhabited by the Wyandot people before French colonists came. St Ignace is connected with Mackinaw City by the Mackinac Bridge and is used as a gateway to the Upper Peninsula for visitors from the Lower Peninsula. It also offers ferry services to Mackinac Island. The city is home to the headquarters of the Mackinac Bands of Chippewa and Ottawa Indians. There are many points of interest and historic sites in St Ignace, such as Straits State Park, Wawatam Lighthouse, Museum of Ojibwa Culture at Old Mission Saint-Ignace, Bridge View Park, Little Bear Fitness Trail, and American Legion Park.
